about
Spare, cinematic and moving, “Take My Hands At Night” is the hard-won first single from the Wellington-based singer-songwriter Ebony Lamb’s forthcoming solo album. In just under four minutes of vivid dream-pop gestures, Ebony gives us a window into the soundworld she conjured up over 2021 with co-production, instrumentation and engineering assistance from two of New Zealand’s most celebrated artists, Bic Runga and Kody Nielson.

The accompanying music video to this first single was shot on 16mm film by Director Ezra Simons (Earth Tongue, Brett McKenzie) and filmed on locations throughout Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland. Made with the help of NZ on Air, and the exceptional crew of Frances Carter (Lighting and Photography), Lara Daly (Makeup) and David Argue (Assistant), this first single brought out the strong visual dynamic so perfectly suited to capture Ebony’s artistic vision that is “Take My Hands at Night”
Take My Hands At Night is a top twenty finalist for the APRA Silver Scroll Songwriting Award 2023.
EBONY LAMB - ALBUM
A captivating work of impressionistic memories, observations and intimate confessions, Ebony wrote her debut album while coming into prominence as an in-demand portrait photographer within New Zealand’s contemporary literature and independent music scenes. The release comes five years after her alt-country band, Eb & Sparrow, amicably parted ways in 2018.
Recorded on vintage analog studio gear and mastered to tape, EBONY LAMB finds Runga and Nielson placing Ebony’s distinct, fragile-but-firm voice within a cinematic confluence of jazz, folk, psychedelia, alt-country and ambient pop. Written over the last five years while coming to terms with the realities of a changing world, themes of gratitude, loss, acceptance and aspiration run through the album like a river.

lyrics
Take my hands at night, I am all yours
I can’t recognise me, but I’m all yours
See her, she’s a surface skater
See the way he holds her, just above the ground
Oh’ searching for you
See the way we split in two
I can do this now
Oh’ falling for you
Hoping that we make it through
I can do this now
O’ searching for you
See the way we split in two
I can do this now
O’ falling for you
Hoping that we make it through
I can do this now
Take my hands at night, I am all yours
I can’t recognise me, but I’m all yours
“taken somewhere else, maybe somewhere close to Twin Peaks'

and a vivid, surrealistic intimacy. The New Zealand singer-songwriter and photographer released three critically-acclaimed albums with her former band before embarking on a solo body of work, produced by Bic Runga & Kody Nielson and released on Nadia Reids boutique label - Slow-Time Records....more
Rich, deep, powerful songwriting and waves of pure emotion, I adore all Nadia Reid's albums. It's an honour to be on her label, and to have watched her perform enthralling every crowd. EBONY LAMB
Bic Runga is a legend in Aotearoa NZ, incredible songs "Close Your Eyes" is a Stand Out track I've listened to on repeat for the last few years, made with Kody Nielson, a killer combo. EBONY LAMB
Tiny Ruins & Hamish Kilgour created possibly my favourite album of all time here. Loose and intentional, lyrics & aesthetics made a world I have on high rotation, as a touchstone, as an ideal. EBONY LAMB

The fave song title has to be a pun on the Canadian national anthem and yes I'm late to this party :) Liked the light touch to the extra strings and horns. Just enough to add colour and swing. Jason Kemp

Powerful vocals and affecting lyrics, this is magnificent stuff. Thank you for sharing your art with us Reb!
Clearly, I am late to the party, but happy to be here now and will listen quietly from my corner so as not to break the spell. theUtmost
